Background of the Study
The informal motorcycle repair industry in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State, represents a vital source of employment and economic activity. In recent years, the growing number of motorcycles as a primary means of transportation has led to a parallel expansion in the repair and maintenance sector (Afolabi, 2023). This informal sector, characterized by flexible labor arrangements and minimal regulatory oversight, has emerged as a key contributor to local employment. Workers in this industry acquire skills through apprenticeship and on-the-job training, enabling them to provide cost-effective repair services. Despite its significance, the sector often faces challenges related to quality control, safety standards, and access to modern tools (Balogun, 2024). Recent investigations suggest that formalizing certain aspects of the industry could improve service quality and job security while preserving its employment-generating benefits (Olatunji, 2025). This study examines the dynamics of the informal motorcycle repair industry, its contribution to local job creation, and the challenges that hinder its full potential, offering insights into potential policy interventions to support and enhance the sector.

Statement of the Problem
Despite its significant role in employment generation, the informal motorcycle repair industry in Ilesa East faces multiple challenges. These include inconsistent service quality, safety concerns, and a lack of formal training standards, which undermine the sector’s long-term sustainability (Ajayi, 2024). The absence of regulatory frameworks has also led to difficulties in scaling operations and improving worker conditions. Consequently, while the industry provides immediate employment, it fails to ensure stable and secure livelihoods for its practitioners. This study seeks to identify the core challenges and propose feasible measures for formalization and improvement.

Objectives of the Study:
• To evaluate the contribution of the informal motorcycle repair industry to local employment.
• To identify challenges affecting service quality and worker safety.
• To recommend policy interventions for formalizing and strengthening the sector.

Research Questions:
• How significant is the informal motorcycle repair industry in generating employment in Ilesa East?
• What challenges hinder quality service delivery and worker safety in this sector?
• Which formalization strategies can improve industry standards and job security?

Research Hypotheses:
• H1: The informal motorcycle repair industry significantly contributes to local employment.
• H2: Lack of formal training negatively affects service quality.
• H3: Policy interventions promoting formalization lead to enhanced industry performance.

Significance of the Study
This study is important for understanding the economic and social contributions of the informal motorcycle repair industry in Ilesa East. Its findings will inform stakeholders and policymakers on effective strategies for formalization, improved training, and safety enhancements. By addressing identified challenges, the study aims to bolster job security and industry standards, fostering long-term sustainable growth (Akinola, 2023; Fashola, 2025). The results will benefit workers and the local economy.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the informal motorcycle repair industry in Ilesa East Local Government Area, Osun State. It focuses solely on employment generation, service quality, and regulatory challenges, excluding other informal sectors. Data are restricted to sources directly related to the industry in the specified area.

Definitions of Terms:
Informal Industry: Economic activities operating outside formal regulatory frameworks.
Employment Generation: The creation of job opportunities within a specific sector.
Motorcycle Repair: The technical maintenance and servicing of motorcycles.
